A protocol for measuring the impact of a smoke-free housing policy on indoor tobacco smoke exposure

Abstract: Background Tobacco remains a leading cause of preventable death in the U.S., responsible for more than 440,000 deaths each year. Approximately 10% of these deaths are attributable to exposure of non-smokers to secondhand smoke (SHS). Residents living in public multi-unit housing (MUH) are at excess risk for SHS exposure compared to the general population. On November 30, 2016, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) passed a rule requiring all public housing agencies to implemen… Show more

“…The demographic composition and prevalence of cigarette smoking among NYCHA and Section 8 residents were highly comparable (p>0.05) (Table 1). 19 More than half of residents reported smelling cigarette smoke (60%) and two-thirds report smelling marijuana smoke (67%) in their home over the past year. Cigarette smoking status and smelling SHS were both strong predictors of smelling SHMS.…”

“…After each laboratory calibration, the Airbeam units were deployed in a large, natural experiment evaluating the impact of new smoke-free housing (SFH) policies on air quality in public housing units every 6 months. 11,23 Due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, we were unable to perform Airbeam sensor calibration 24 months post-SFH policy implementation (April-September 2020). A calibration technical error for select Airbeam 2 sensors occurred at 30 months post-SFH policy (December-March 2021), leading to their exclusion from data analysis at that timepoint.…”
