A prospective study on vulvovaginal candidiasis: multicentre molecular epidemiology of pathogenic yeasts in China

Abstract: Background Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is frequent in women of reproductive age, but very limited data are available on the epidemiology in cases of VVC in China. Objectives The current study has been conducted to reveal the prevalence, species distribution of yeast causing VVC and molecular genetics of Candida albicans in China. Methods Vaginal swabs were collected from 543 VVC outpatients recruited in 12 hospitals in China between September 2017 and March 2018. They were preliminarily incubated on Sabouraud… Show more

“…This shows that there is agreement among the herbalists and the community on the medicinal plants for the management and treatment of candidiasis. OPC and VVC are caused by Candida spp [ 74 , 75 ], thus similar plants are used in their management and treatment. Chekole [ 76 ] pointed out that values of FIC indicate the magnitude of shared knowledge of the most important herbal plant species for treating diseases that are prevalent in the community.…”

“…MLST studies have been conducted on C. albicans isolates from the digestive tract, blood infections, oral leukoplakia, and vaginal secretions (33)(34)(35)(36)(37). In addition, MLST has been applied widely to study nosocomial infection, which is important for the prevention and control of infection (38,39). Therefore, fine genotyping for clinically pathogenic C. albicans has important implications for the epidemiology of candidal infections, especially for infections with high incidence, such as VVC.…”

“…Clinical C. albicans isolates (1052 and C1-14) and NAC species (Candida glabrata, Candida parapsilosis, Candida tropicalis) were selected from our previous multicenter epidemiology study on VVC in China (38). Two C. auris isolates (10913 and 14918) were obtained from Wester Dijk Fungal Biodiversity Institute, and the standard strains (SC5314 and ATCC 90028) were reserved in the Institute of Dermatology, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences.…”

“…Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) caused by non-albicans Candida (NAC) species are increasingly reported today. Given that more drug-resistant strains have been found in NAC species, we next analyze the EGFR-MAPK responses during the NAC species infections by using 3 clinical NAC isolates of C. tropicalis, C. glabrata, C. parapsilosis previously isolated from VVC patients (38) and 2 strains of C. auris (CBS10913 and CBS14918). The results were compared with 4 strains of C. albicans (SC5314, ATCC90028, 1052 and C1-14).…”
