A prospective study on glioblastoma in the elderly

Abstract: Data from techniques such as limiting oxygen index, thermal analysis, scanning electron microscope, heat deformation curve, mechanical properties measurement, etc. show that cured epoxy resin modified by brominated castor oil possesses good flame retardation, toughness, moderate smoke suppression, and some degree of resistance to heat. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. “…The addition of temozolomide to radiotherapy for newly diagnosed glioblastoma resulted in a clinically meaningful and statistically significant survival benefit with minimal additional toxicity. In elderly patients with GBM, the addition of chemotherapy to surgical and radiotherapy protocols was shown to be beneficial by Brandes, et al [6]. The trial showed that the addition of chemotherapy confers significant benefit to patients 65 or older.…”

“…The optimal management of this CNS neoplasm in the elderly is still a matter of debate, with several combinations beings studied. A number of small, prospective studies have shown the benefit of a tri-modal approach involving chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgical resection in elderly patients [4][5][6][7][8]. Most recently, RTOG studied the use of upfront stereotactic radiosurgery, radiation therapy, and carmustine (BCNU) versus radiation therapy and BCNU alone.…”

“…21,32,35) In addition, elderly patients have frequently been undertreated or untreated. 5,26) Surprisingly, a retrospective cohort study in Minnesota found that the proportion of elderly patients receiving no treatment increased from 4% between 1980 and 1989 to 18% between 1990 and 1995. 26) However, elderly patients with brain tumors should be treated based on sound scientific data and not ad hoc decisions.…”

“…Temozolomide had previously shown some improvement in progression-free survival (PFS) and the quality of life (QOL) in patients with recurrent GBM [11], but only recently has demonstrated significant improvement in overall survival for newly diagnosed malignant gliomas [12,13] when used in the concurrent and adjuvant setting.…”
