“…The predictive value of preoperative BCVA for postoperative BCVA has been reported several times with consistent results [1,5,6,7,8,9,13,17,21]. Our results show a similar association indicating that preoperative BCVA is a reproducible prognostic factor for postoperative BCVA.…”

“…Although predictive values of some factors have been reproduced in different studies, substantial variation in results exists. Duration of symptoms has been studied as determinant for postoperative outcome [1,5,7,8,14,18,21,22,23]. Similar to other studies [19,22,23], we did not find an association between duration of symptoms and postoperative VA. A possible explanation could be the subjective nature of these symptoms with unreliable estimation of symptom duration [14].…”

“…13 Furthermore, ERMs are known to cause aniseikonia with improvement in stereoacuity following ERM removal, especially if performed early. 17,18 There is conflicting opinion regarding the timing of ERM removal. This study, one of the largest published series, demonstrates that earlier intervention (better preoperative VA) yields a better final VA.…”

“…This finding suggests that functional recovery primarily depends on the preoperative status and early intervention. 18 In recent studies, prolonged macular traction is known to cause irreversible photoreceptor cell loss and disruption of alignment. 17,[19][20][21] Outer retinal structures rarely return to normal once they are impaired, thus indicating a poor visual prognosis.…”
