A prospective, randomized, double‐blind, placebo‐controlled multi‐centre study on the efficacy and safety of sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) in children with seasonal allergic rhinoconjunctivitis to grass pollen

Abstract: Our study indicates that SLIT had a positive effect on the reduction of a multiple symptom-medication score, mainly by significantly reducing rescue medication use, but had no significant effect on symptoms alone in children with rhinoconjunctivitis to grass pollen compared with a placebo.

“…Wilson et al (1698) published a Cochrane Collaboration meta-analysis of SLIT in rhinitis and proposed that it was safe and effective. The Cochrane meta-analysis (1699) was followed by several studies which accorded with the results of the review (1103,(1700)(1701)(1702)(1703)(1704)(1705)(1706)(1707)(1708)(1709)(1710)(1711). Moreover, pivotal trials have been carried out and the results on over 600 patients showed convincingly that in grass pollen allergy, SLIT is safe and effective using tablets (1103,1712).…”

“…[11][12][13][14][15] Few studies include children younger than 5 years. 6,7,16 The 1993 European Academy of Allergology and Clinical Immunology position paper advises avoidance of immunotherapy for children younger than 5 years. 17 Thus, European health care professionals have been reluctant to prescribe specific immunotherapy in very young children.…”

“…The duration of SLIT courses varied from 3 months (minimum duration) to 3 years (maximum duration). The administration regimen was preseasonal in three studies (27,32,44), co-seasonal in three (15,42,47), and continuous in eight trials (30,35,38,39,41,43,46,54), despite the allergen was seasonal. In the remaining 27 trials the adopted regimen was precoseasonal.…”
