A Prospective Randomized Controlled Trial of the Transobturator Tape and Tissue Fixation Mini-Sling in Patients with Stress Urinary Incontinence: 5-Year Results

Abstract: Contrary to reports in the literature of poor results with mini-slings, the tissue fixation system mini-sling demonstrated a higher cure rate and lower complication rate than the transobturator tape.

“…In a follow-up time of 36 months, the TFS group (n = 39) showed a success rate of 90 %, compared with 84% for the TOT group (n = 38). 12 women in the TOT group (31.5 %) had distinct pain symptoms during inguinal extensor movements [13]. Currently, there are no further relevant German publications or evidence of expansion of this system in Germany.…”

“…Various single-incision mid-urethral tapes involving only one incision in the vagina and no needle passages through the abdomen or groin have been developed (Deole et al, 2011;Abdel-Fattah et al, 2012;Barber et al, 2012;Sivaslioglu et al, 2012). A study that compared primary fixation of five different mini slings and one polyproylene mesh showed that the Ophira TM mini sling system presented the best fixation in Wister rats (Palma et al, 2012).…”

“…Dear Editor, Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on new operations are important, even with the omissions mentioned by Basu and Duckett [1] and those not mentioned: the absence of two adjustable tissue fixation system (TFS) minisling studies that contradict their thesis [2,3]. A TFS/TOT (transobturator tape) RCT by Sivaslioglu et al in the Journal of Urology in 2010 reported the following: "TFS has a cure rate superior to that of the TOT, 83 % vs 75 % at 5-year follow up (p 0.029).…”

If subjective cure is added, the differential at 5 years is even larger at 89 % vs 78 % [2]. In 2009, Sekiguchi et al reported a 90 % cure rate in the 40 % of patients who had intrinsic sphincter deficiency (ISD) [3].…”
