A prospective interventional study of effect of accelerated orthokeratology on the corneal curvature and refraction among young adults with myopia

Abstract: m e d i c a l j o u r n a l a r m e d f o r c e s i n d i a 7 2 ( 2 0 1 6 ) 1 2 5 -1 3Background: Orthokeratology with reverse geometry contact lens is a non-surgical alternative to conventional contact lenses for correction of myopia. However, the strength of evidence for its efficacy and safety is limited to retrospective studies and only a few prospective studies. This prospective study, the first on Indian subjects, evaluated the outcome of orthokeratology among young myopes.Methods: Fifty eyes of 25 young… Show more

“…This is due to the limited number and access to the Log MAR chart within the facility. A similar conversion has been reported by Khan et al (2016) in their OK study. Future work may examine the long-term effects of OK lens wear on corneal curvature and its effect on other ocular parameters.…”

“…The strict inclusion criteria that included low refractive error and low astigmatism probably contributed to the successful outcome. previous studies on OK treatment among low myopes (Soni et al, 2003;Cho et al, 2005;Liong et al, 2015;Khan et al, 2016). It appears that ethnicity and brands of OK lenses do not affect the outcome provided they are fitted well in line with the manufacturer's recommendation.…”

“… 109 In another prospective study on young myopes, these views were supported with favorable outcomes in 25 myopic subjects. 110 Overall, the contact lens combined with other measures seems promising, but the cost and hygiene-related concerns need to be addressed before widespread suggestions are made. 111 …”

“…Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) has been demonstrated to improve naked visual acuity during the day ( Swarbrick, 2006 ; Khan et al, 2016 ) by reshaping the corneal surface and to slow myopia progression ( Swarbrick, 2006 ; Le et al, 2010 ; Santodomingo-Rubido et al, 2015 , 2017 ; Wen et al, 2015 ; Huang et al, 2016 ; Chen et al, 2018 ) by changing the peripheral defocusing state ( Queirós et al, 2010 ; Kang and Swarbrick, 2011 ; Santodomingo-Rubido et al, 2013 ). An increasing number of children have been using them in China ( Tay et al, 2017 ), Singapore ( Saw et al, 2019 ), etc., especially for the latter reason.…”
