A prospective evaluation of posterior capsule opacification in eyes with diabetes mellitus: a case–control study

Abstract: Aim To compare the development of posterior capsule opacification (PCO) between eyes with and without diabetes mellitus after single-piece hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lens implantation 4 years postoperatively. Methods In this prospective, observational case-control study carried out at Iladevi Cataract and IOL Research Centre, Ahmedabad, India, 75 consecutive eyes with diabetes mellitus (cases) were compared with 75 age-matched eyes with age-related cataract (controls). A detailed, preoperative and posteri… Show more

“…Few studies have used them to analyze ACO. 9 However, despite the development of new-image analysis methods, clinical analysis remains the most widely used method of quantifying ACO. Scheimpflug imaging, such as with the Pentacam HR system (Oculus Optikger€ ate GmbH), is simple to perform and fast and has an easier learning curve than slitlamp-based photographic ACO grading systems.…”

“…Studies have sought to determine how to prevent and treat ACO and PCO, and several risk factors that predispose to the development of ACO and PCO have been identified. [1][2][3] Because of the clinical importance of both types of capsule opacification, objective quantification of ACO 3,4 and PCO [5][6][7][8][9] is of utmost importance in assessing the efficacy of different methods of evaluation. After reviewing the literature we concluded that at present, clinical quantification 2,9 is the most common method used to measure ACO after cataract surgery.…”

“…This gap provides a channel for the lens epithelial cells to migrate onto the posterior capsule, causing extensive PCO. 2 The incidence of aphakic/pseudophakic glaucoma is 19%, which is varied depending on the time at which the pressure is recorded after the surgery and mode of recording.…”

“…With the new phenomenon of diabetes epidemic, more and more cataracts are presenting with diabetes and so more and more surgery is needed 3. Cataract surgery in diabetics is indicated not only to improve visual acuity, but also to allow assessment and treatment of retinopathy 4. Cataract surgeries are often carried out earlier amongst diabetics in developed countries to allow diagnosis and treatment of retinopathy and maculopathy 5.…”
