A prospective, controlled study of a 9/0 elastic polypropylene suture for cataract surgery: Refractive results and complications

Abstract: A prospective, randomised study was performed on 52 patients undergoing routine limbal extracapsular cataract surgery to compare the effect of 10/0 nylon and 9/0 elastic polypropylene sutures on post-operative astigmatism. Both the magnitude and the axis of the astigmatism were measured by keratometry and refraction pre-operatively and at regular intervals for 3 months post-operatively. Both groups showed an increase in the magnitude of astigmatism immediately post-operatively. The polypropylene group showed a… Show more

“…Suture 'cheese wiring' into the anterior chamber during and after surgery was not a frequent complication in canaloplasty, possibly resulting from the underestimated tensile strength of the TM. We did not find any difference in the frequency of cheesewiring between the 6-0 and 10-0 Prolene group, thereby indicating that neither the thickness nor the elasticity of Prolene sutures 36,37 may be relevant for this adverse event.…”

“…The immediate postoperative astigmatism and its subsequent changes are affected by factors such as the surgical technique, type of suture used, and experience of the surgeon. [1][2][3]13 Cataract surgery in children, with or without anterior vitrectomy, can be done through small limbal incisions. 14 For IOL implantation, the incision must be enlarged in accordance with the diameter of the lens to be implanted.…”
