A prospective comparison of computed tomography and myelography in the diagnosis of herniated lumbar disks.

Abstract: Although CT effectively demonstrates normal and herniated intervertebral disks, the value of CT in low back pain has not been adequately evaluated. We compared CT prospectively with myelography in 107 patients referred to Ulleval Hospital Department of Radiology for myelography. Fifty-two patients subsequently had spinal explorations, one patient twice during the study and two patients at two levels. Forty-six CT and 44 myelographic diagnoses agreed perfectly with the operative diagnosis at that level. In 30 d… Show more

“…CT, being non-invasive, is preferred in many institutions as the first examination. In several previous reports, with relatively large numbers of patients, CT was found to be as good as (10,20,23,26) or better (9,25,30) than myelography. In contrast BELL et colI.…”

“…Since that time several articles have been published attesting to the diagnostic accuracy of CT with regard to disc herniations (Williams et al, 1980;Haughton et al, 1982). In a previous paper (Tchang et al, 1982), one of us reported on the first 52 patients of this series with emphasis on the comparative value of CT versus myelography.…”

“…In many cases, where a mass in the spinal canal is suspected, CT is a reliable diagnostic method (3,6,10,15), but MR is used with increasing frequency (4,8,11,13,16).…”
