A proposed modified efficiency for thermosyphon solar heating systems

The need of renewable energy sources due to climate change and thus the search for clean energy sources, justify the growing investment on new types of solar collectors. The research has contributed to this expansion in the scope of solar concentrator collectors, with the efficiency as the main goal. Many works have been developed in order to optimize the thermal stratification of the fluid inside the tubes and heat reservoirs, as well as mathematical modeling considering the problem as transient heat flow as boundary condition. In this work is studied experimentally, the heating of the water by solar collector modified from the conventional evacuated tube, focusing on efficiency. With the help of CFD software, a theoretical analysis is done to visualize the phenomenon, assuming the same boundary conditions and geometric experimental problem. An important approach concerns the physical separation of the flows of both cold and hot water inside the evacuated tube. The system performance was analyzed using experimental tests performed outdoors with sunlight.

The present study intends to develop building-integrated solar collector (BISC). The storage tank inside is designed in multi-function. BISC combines the solar collector and the water storage tank together with one face acting as the solar absorber. A double-glazing design is adopted to reduce the heat loss. A PC-based automatic operating system is designed and built to monitor the long-term performance of the BISC system with 8 collector units. Hot water discharge is controlled from 18:00 until 22:00 to simulate the hot water load of a family. The discharge rate is at 60 L/hr. A 30 L backup electric water heater was connected to the BISC system. The long-term test results in winter season show that about 50 % energy saving was achieved in clear days. The monitored results have also shown that the daily-total solar irradiation on a 75 o tilted surface (the BISC installed angle) is higher than the horizontal surface, about 40-50 % higher at Ht > 10 MJ/m^2day. This assures that BISC will produce more hot water in winter. This proves that the use of BISC as parapet or sun-shading canopy of a building (installation angle > 75 o) is technically feasible. The characteristic efficiency of the installed BISC with different colors is 0.34-0.39.

Resumo. O sistema solar de aquecimento de água operando por circulação natural (termossifão) é um sistema autoregulado, isento de controles mecânicos, constituído basicamente por um arranjo de coletores solares, reservatório térmico e tubulações hidráulicas de conexão. Esse tipo de sistema não utiliza bomba para fazer a circulação do fluido de trabalho, sendo também chamado de sistema com circulação natural. Pode-se predizer o desempenho do sistema de aquecimento solar de água a partir da extrapolação de dados físicos em escala menor ou da simulação de dados de um modelo matemático análogo. Como a análise de um modelo físico é geralmente mais difícil e dispendiosa, o projeto de um novo sistema baseia-se quase sempre na predição do desempenho através de um modelo matemático, construído de relações empíricas obtidas de dados experimentais em sistemas solares de aquecimento de água, sob condições especificadas, que permite a estimativa do desempenho do sistema em um computador, para condições arbitrariamente definidas. No intuito de permitir uma maior generalização e conhecimento destes equipamentos, este trabalho apresenta uma análise adimensional do desempenho térmico de aquecedores solares de água operando em circulação natural e em circulação forçada. A análise desenvolvida neste trabalho buscou identificar os números adimensionais representativos dos fenômenos associados aos aspectos geométricos e operacionais dos aquecedores solares sobre o seu desempenho. Restrições como o posicionamento do reservatório térmico, número de conexões ao longo das tubulações, perfis de demanda, posicionamento dos aquecedores auxiliares e variabilidade das condições climáticas, entre outras, são algumas das variáveis que devem ser levadas em conta no projeto destes sistemas. A definição correta pode conduzir a uma economia apreciável nos custos do sistema de aquecimento solar de água, bem como, um melhor entendimento da operação do mesmo.
