A Proposed Method for Drawing the Great Circle Representing Dip Angle and Strike Changes

Abstract: Waviness or undulations of a discontinuity plane due to folding result in changes in the orientation of the discontinuities. This creates difficulties in determining the general trend of the discontinuity planes on both sides of wedges and the plunge angle of wedge-type slides. However, it is possible to draw great circles representing the discontinuity planes on both sides of the wedge with strike and dip angle changes on a stereographic net. Such a wedge may have failed in the past but may be stable presentl… Show more

“…In kinematic analysis, internal friction angle is used as data from slope geometry and shear strength parameters of discontinuities. These analyses can be used where failures in rock slopes are controlled by discontinuities [28][29][30]. Possible failure types (planar, wedge type, and tipping type failures) in rock slopes can be determined by kinematic analysis.…”

“…The Bornova Melange, which overlies the basement rocks in the Izmir region, underwent intense tectonic deformation during and after sedimentation (Erdogan, 1990;Kincal, 2005;Kincal and Koca, 2009;Koca, 1995). Neogene sedimentary rocks discordantly overlie the Bornova Melange rocks.…”

“…The substratum of the construction area consists of sandstone/shale alternations (Koca & Kıncal, 2004;Kıncal, 2005;2009); the sandstones outcrop with high-angle slopes; the shales have lower slope angles (10-20°). There are also some volcanic rocks.…”
