[1] High-precision ID-TIMS U-Pb zircon ages for 12 interstratified tuffs and tonsteins are used to radiometrically calibrate the detailed lithostratigraphic, cyclostratigraphic, and biostratigraphic framework of the Carboniferous Donets Basin of eastern Europe. Chemical abrasion of zircons, use of the internationally calibrated EARTHTIME mixed U-Pb isotope dilution tracer, and improved mass spectrometry guided by detailed error analysis have resulted in an age resolution of <0.05%, or $100 ka, for these Carboniferous volcanics. This precision allows the resolution of time in the Milankovitch band and confirms the long-standing hypothesis that individual high-frequency Pennsylvanian cyclothems and bundles of cyclothems into fourth-order sequences are the eustatic response to orbital eccentricity ($100 and 400 ka) forcing. Tuning of the fourth-order sequences in the Donets Basin to the long-period eccentricity cycle results in a continuous age model for the Middle to Late Pennsylvanian (MoscovianKasimovian-Ghzelian) strata of the basin and their record of biological and climatic changes through the latter portion of the late Paleozoic Ice Age. Detailed fusulinid and conodont zonations allow the export of this age model to sections throughout Euramerica. Additional ages for Mississippian strata provide among the first robust radiometric calibration points within this subperiod and result in variable lowering of the base ages of its constituent stages compared to recent global time scale compilations.

In traditional Chinese Carboniferous zonal schemes, Serpukhovian foraminiferal zones were broadly defined by genera, long-ranging species or local species, making it difficult to correlate to equivalent foraminiferal zones worldwide. The Serpukhovian Hezhou Formation at the Fenghuangshan section on the Lower Yangtze Platform was deposited in an open to restricted shallow-water environment, in which foraminifers flourished. Four foraminiferal zones named for cosmopolitan species found in this formation are established. In ascending order, they are the Plectomillerella tortula Zone, Eostaffellina paraprotvae Zone, Bradyina cribrostomata Zone and Monotaxinoides transitorius Zone. These zones permit reasonable correlation of the regional Chinese Dewuan (Serpukhovian) Stage to regional Russian substages (Tarussian, Steshevian, Protvian and Zapaltjubian). Preliminary correlations are also proposed between the Dewuan Stage and western European regional Mississippian substages (late Brigantian, Pendleian and Arnsbergian) and Chesterian formations of the type Mississippian region in North America.

Foraminifers of the Viséan–Serpukhovian boundary interval in Western Palaeotethys: a review

A detailed revision of foraminiferal zonal schemes in sections throughout Europe and North Africa for the Viséan–Serpukhovian boundary interval suggests that several foraminiferal taxa might have the potential to form reliable markers throughout the Palaeotethys. This would support the currently investigated boundary definition based on the First Appearance Datum of the conodont Lochriea ziegleri. However, correlation of these foraminiferal markers in the Western Palaeotethys region has encountered several problems, partly arising from taxonomic issues, but mainly because of apparent discrepancies between the First Occurrence Data (FOD). Analysis of the available foraminiferal data has revealed that some taxa show marked delays in their FODs, due to the timing of westward dispersal within the Palaeotethys, emanating from a probable source in eastern Russia. As a result of this investigation, two dispersal routes have been identified, a northern branch and a southern branch. In general, the displacements within the southern branch occurred more rapidly than in the northern branch. In addition to different dispersal routes, separation of the main foraminiferal markers in stratigraphical sections from different regions can result from isolation of shallow‐water facies of the inner platform from those of relatively deeper‐water settings in the outer platform, the latter showing more consistent foraminiferal FODs. The differences in palaeobathymetry and associated energy levels have enabled two foraminiferal zonal schemes to be distinguished for the Viséan–Serpukhovian boundary interval in the Western Palaeotethys, one for the inner platform and a second one for the outer platform.
