A project for a course in operating systems

Abstract: A simulated machine approach to an operating systems course project is described. The motivations for including the project in the course are delineated. The reasons for selecting the particular type of project are given. The fictitious hardware and the requirements for its simulation are presented. The conceptual issues are amplified. The methodology for a high level process oriented design for a multiprogrammed batch environment is delineated. The primitives to be used in the design are described and motivat… Show more

“…Grit and George [GRIT771 describe a top down approach to the course and suggest several software projects. Ruschitzka [RUSC77] and Shub [SHUB83] describe projects similar to Shaw's overview. The projects differ in whether the instructor provides a machine simulator and the level of the simulation.…”

“…Shub [7] has the students simulate the machine as well as write the operating system. The simulators at IUP have some similarities to these projects; however, there are significant differences as well IUlfs two simulated machines are called HAL and OGRE.…”
