A prognostic model for advanced stage nonsmall cell lung cancer

Abstract: Background Radiographic shadows of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) are commonly described as predominantly in the upper lung zones. Methods We evaluated the lung distribution of small opacities on surveillance chest radiographs (CXRs) taken between 1981 and 2010 among 2,467 underground US coal miners. All had evidence of pneumoconiosis (category ≥1/0), based on the contemporary International Labour Office Classification of Radiographs of Pneumoconioses. Results Small opacity involvement was approximately eq… Show more

“…Although radiotherapy and multiagent chemotherapy are used in the treatment of patients with ES-NSCLC, the prognosis remains poor, with a median survival of 6 to 12 months and 1-year survival rates between 20% and 50% [41, 42]. In the current study, the one-year survival rate was 52.3% (i.e., >50%).…”

“…In this study, disease stage was also identified as an independent prognostic factor, with improved survival noted in those patients with Grade IIIB NSCLC when compared with Grade IV disease. Similar findings have been shown in other studies 19,24. T-stage was also shown to be an independent prognostic factor in our study, with improved survival observed in patients with T1 stage compared with T2-TX.…”

“…Myeloid-lineage cells, including monocytes and their progeny, promote tumorigenesis and angiogenesis [35], and contribute to the suppression of host antitumor immunity so that not surprisingly then, development of peripheral blood neutrophilia or monocytosis are adverse prognostic factors in multiple solid tumors [36-38]. A new nomenclature defines human monocyte subsets into three, classical (CD14++CD16-), intermediate (CD14++CD16+) and nonclassical (CD14 + CD16++) [39].…”
