A Process Perspective on Industrial Symbiosis

Abstract: SummaryIt has been long recognized in the conceptual literature that industrial symbiosis requires a perspective that focuses on long-term evolution. This has not yet been matched by adopting an adequate process-oriented research methodology. This article provides the underpinnings for such a methodology, presents a developed methodology, event sequence analysis, and shows its added value through a set of research questions and an empirical example. It shows how the process perspective leads to asking new rese… Show more

“…If the stakeholders agree upon the accuracy and embeddedness of the model, the second question is whether the simulated mechanisms, imposed by the design intervention, lead to the desired outcome. Comparative IS dynamics typologies such as those perceived by Boons et al [19] may be helpful to communicate the simulation results to the stakeholders. Along the process, the researcher or facilitator observes the process of participation during concept evaluation through development and use of an ABM.…”

“…Consequently, social learning can occur in the long run, as engaged organizations may find new ways of dealing with common problems and may encounter their interests and problems in networks (Innes and Booher, 1999). The evolutionary perspective suggests a systematic longitudinal analysis of events influencing network evolution (Boons et al, 2014;Spekkink, 2013;Spekkink, 2015). Event sequences uncover temporal patterns, such as the order and the duration of the events.…”

“…It will be referred to as the RTP system from this point on. Figure 7.7 represents the adoption of a process perspective, where a process is defined as the central subject together with the 'different types of events that the central subject endures or makes happen' [350]. Any entity of any of the resource, process or product sets can be used as a starting point to define the system.…”

“…That is, the only rule to follow for depicting any sequence of processes using the RTP system unit is that products of one system are the resources of a future system, and the resources of one system are the products of a past system. This is a result of adopting a process oriented view for analysis [350].…”
