“…[11] All staff involved in MoM attended ENGAGE training; ENGAGE, Ireland's national men's health training, is a one-day comprehensive training that aims to develop gender competency in the provision of health services for men. [22,23] MoM was delivered by experienced PA Coordinators who were specifically recruited and counselled with respect to the nuances of the programme and of working with male participants. “…Over the lifetime of the policy a range of research activities have taken place that have yielded a range of research outputs, including but not limited to peer reviewed publications. There has been a particular research focus on men's health policy 5,[12][13][14] ; capacity building and community engagement in men's health 45,[54][55][56][57][58][59][60] ; health conditions affecting men 18,20,57,58 ; men and mental health [59][60][61][62] ; middle-aged men and suicide 23 and the health and service needs of men. 8,18,45,53,63,64 Toolkits and guides were developed for service providers 55,65,66 ; and these were integrated into the development and delivery of training programs (see Capacity Building section for further details on ENGAGE) [67][68][69] Men's health information booklets, informed by the target population groups of men, were also developed to support service providers in the field as well as individual men.…”

“…67 Critically, over time, men's health has been integrated into the business plans of partners via the inclusion of collaborative initiatives. For example, the ENGAGE training 67,68 is an excellent example of how five institutions [Health Service Executive, Institute of Technology Carlow, Men's Development Network, Waterford Institute of Technology and Men's Health Forum in Ireland] formally partnered to design, deliver and evaluate both the process of delivering 54 and the outcome 72 of the ENGAGE training across Ireland.…”

“…However, these characteristics are not always naturally acquired and training around gender-sensitive work with men has been recognized as an imperative part of program success. 21,22,30,31,32 It is no surprise then that the ENGAGE training required for the LSPs, PACs and other service providers involved was so well received and implemented by them throughout the MOM program. The ENGAGE training was effective in building capacity among service providers to work with men 22 and its consistent delivery has been previously recognized and praised in the evaluation of Ireland's NMHP.…”
