Understanding the dynamics of organic carbon mineralization is fundamental in forecasting biosphere to atmosphere net carbon ecosystem exchange (NEE). With this perspective, we developed 3D-CMCC-PSM, a new version of the hybrid process based model 3D-CMCC FEM where also heterotrophic respiration (R h ) is explicitly simulated. The aim was to quantify NEE as a forward problem, by subtracting ecosystem respiration (R eco ) to gross primary productivity (GPP). To do so, we developed a simplification of the soil carbon dynamics routine proposed in the DNDC (DeNitrification-DeComposition) computer simulation model. The method calculates decomposition as a function of soil moisture, temperature, state of the organic compartments, and relative abundance of microbial pools. Given the pulse dynamics of soil respiration, we introduced modifications in some of the principal constitutive relations involved in phenology and littering sub-routines. We quantified the model structure-related uncertainty in NEE, by running our training simulations over 1000 random parameter-sets extracted from parameter distributions expected from literature. 3D-CMCC-PSM predictability was tested on independent time series for 6 Fluxnet sites. The model resulted in daily and monthly estimations highly consistent with the observed time series. It showed lower predictability in Mediterranean ecosystems, suggesting that it may need further improvements in addressing evapotranspiration and water dynamics.

IntroduzioneNegli ultimi decenni, il problema dei cambiamenti climatici a scala globale, in particolare dovuto all'aumento della concentrazione di CO 2 antropogenica in atmosfera e il conseguente innalzamento della temperatura media del pianeta, ha assunto una rilevanza prioritaria. Nel secolo appena trascorso la temperatura della superficie terrestre ha subito un incremento di circa 0.74 °C (IPCC 2007) con incrementi record negli ultimi anni (IPCC 2014). Nel periodo compreso tra il 1995 ed il 2000, la temperatura media della superficie del pianeta è aumentata di circa 0.15 °C (IPCC 2001), mentre dal 2000 ad oggi si sono verificati 12 degli anni più caldi dall'inizio delle misura- Bonis' watershed (Calabria, Italy). At present, the climate changes issue is perhaps the greatest threat that is affecting people and the environment. Forest ecosystems have a key role in the mitigation of climate change. In this context, the prediction of the evolution and growth dynamics of the forests including carbon and water fluxes, and in relation to forest management has become a primary objective. The present study aims at defining a protocol for data collection and the workflow for using the 3D-CMCC-CNR-FEM model in a small mountain watershed in the Calabria region. Within this work we synergistically integrate data coming from different methods (e.g., LiDAR, eddy covariance and sample area) to predict forest dynamics (growth, carbon and water fluxes).
