A Probiotic Targets Bile Acids Metabolism to Alleviate Ulcerative Colitis by Reducing Conjugated Bile Acids

Fan Jingjing,
Jin Weilin,
Su Shaochen
et al.

Abstract: Scope: Gut microbiota (GM) dysbiosis and dysregulated bile acids (BAs) metabolism have been linked to ulcerative colitis (UC) pathogenesis. The possibility of utilizing live probiotics with a defined BAs‐metabolizing capability to modify the composition BAs for UC treatment remains unexplored. Methods and resultsIn this study, Strain GR‐4 is sourced from traditional Chinese fermented food, “Jiangshui,” and demonstrated the ability to deconjugate two common conjugated BAs by over 69% and 98.47%, respectively. It… Show more

“…Consequently, the traditional fermentation of Jiangshui encompasses the synergistic actions of various microorganisms, such as lactic acid bacteria, yeasts, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus fermentum, and Candida species [29][30][31][32]. Studies have shown that strains isolated from Jiangshui exert multiple beneficial physiological functions through the modulation of the intestinal microbiota, such as antioxidation, the alleviation of ulcerative colitis, the reduction of uric acid levels, and anti-anxiety effects, making them an important source of probiotics [24,[33][34][35]. Therefore, this study attempted to screen and identify probiotics with UA-lowering capabilities from Gansu "Jiangshui", providing candidate strains for the treatment of hyperuricemia.…”
