A probiotic combination attenuates experimental colitis through inhibition of innate cytokine production

Abstract: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a severe immune cell-mediated syndrome characterised by extensive inflammatory and effector mucosal responses leading to tissue destruction in the colon and small intestine. The leading hypothesis is that dysbiosis of the gut flora causes an excessive immune response and inflammation in the gastrointestinal track. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) can correct dysbiosis of the normal microbiota. In the current study, the therapeutic potential of seven LAB strains in combination to t… Show more

“…Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium were the main probiotic in intestine, which play crucial roles in the maintenance of gastrointestinal micro-ecological balance 39 . APP/PS1 mice showed less quantities of these two beneficial microbes compared to C57BL/6 mice, while JATH treatment elevated their amount (Fig.…”

“…Lactobacillus casei and Bifidobacterium lactis ameliorated injury to the intestinal mucosa and liver in a 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid-induced colitis model [ 38 ]. Also, treatment with a probiotic combination that included lactobacilli, bifidobacteria, and streptococci reduced the levels of proinflammatory cytokines in colitis [ 39 ]. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of a combination of 12 probiotics (lactobacilli, bifidobacteria, and streptococci) with prebiotics, rosavin, and zinc for the treatment of IBD.…”

“…Recently, a large number of antibiotic-resistant bacteria have been found in dairy products, for example, Salmonella enterica in dry milk nutrition, Staphylococcus aureus in raw and pasteurized milk and in ice cream and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium in cheeses [15,31]. There is information in the literature that some bacteriocins produced by lactic acid bacteria can inhibit foodborne multidrug-resistant pathogens, which favorably distinguishes them from other registered bacteriocins with a rather narrow inhibitory spectrum [24,26].…”
