A Primer on Observational Measurement

Abstract: Observational measurement plays an integral role in a variety of scientific endeavors within biology, psychology, sociology, education, medicine, and marketing. The current article provides an interdisciplinary primer on observational measurement; in particular, it highlights recent advances in observational methodology and the challenges that accompany such growth. First, we detail the various types of instrument that can be used to standardize measurements across observers. Second, we argue for the importanc… Show more

“…In most of the addressed studies (82.6%), not taking confounding factors under control was considered as a significant limitation in the cross-sectional research design. In addition, using standardized measurement instruments is important in increasing the quality of results obtained in cross-sectional studies (24).…”

“…Nevertheless, observational measurements have several challenges relating to the experience over time, and the measurement may vary on account of systematic or stochastic methods [ 53 ]. Additionally, observational methods are unable to determine the user’s psychological state while employing the system.…”

“…Objective measures of psychoemotional state, which are implicitly desirable in clinical and research applications alike [32], [33], could complement Self-RIs and help overcome some of their shortcomings. Certain Self-RIs are sufficiently brief and can be completed on a regular basis (e.g., monthly or weekly) as part of electronic platforms designed to support long-term monitoring of persons at risk.…”
