A presentation of Attentional Semantics

Abstract: The paper presents the two main assumptions of Attentional Semantics--(A) and (B), and its main aim (C). (A) Conscious experience is determined by attention: there cannot be consciousness without attention. Consciousness is explained as the product of attentional activity. Attentional activity can be performed thanks to a special kind of energy: nervous energy. This energy is supplied by the organ of attention. “…3 This substantial diversity from the whole philosophical tradition is, however, essentially real: Ceccato's thought presents vague analogies with only part of Kant's philosophy and with the operationalism of H. Dingler and that of P. Bridgman. 4 For a survey of the revision of Ceccato's thought and of the changes made to it, see also Marchetti (2006). “…As I tried to show elsewhere (Marchetti 2001(Marchetti , 2003(Marchetti , 2005, the individuation of the operations responsible for the production of the meanings of words, thought and, more in general, of any kind of conscious experience, can be fruitfully carried out-using Dewey's pragmatist vocabulary (Dewey 1933)-in terms of means and ends. More specifically, it is possible to describe, adopting a firstperson perspective, the meanings of words, as well as any other kind of conscious experience, in terms of the end they have for the organism experiencing them, and to conceive of the operations responsible for their production as the physical means and processes developed and implemented in order to achieve the end.…”
