A prequel to the Dantean Anomaly: the precipitation seesaw and droughts of 1302 to 1307 in Europe

Abstract: Abstract. The cold/wet anomaly of the 1310s (“Dantean Anomaly”) has attracted a lot of attention from scholars, as it is commonly interpreted as a signal of the transition between the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA) and the Little Ice Age (LIA). The huge variability that can be observed during this decade, like the high interannual variability observed in the 1340s, has been highlighted as a side effect of this rapid climatic transition. In this paper, we demonstrate that a multi-seasonal drought of almost 2 ye… Show more

“…Here, the earliest climate history research was by Konstantin Veselovskij (1857), who compared historical information from various source types against early 19th century statistical climate data (for more details of Veselovskij's work, see Zhogova, 2013). Mikhail Bogolepov later analysed climate-related information in published Cyrillic and Latin sources from the 10th century onwards (Bogolepov, 1907(Bogolepov, , 1908(Bogolepov, , 1911. Other studies have focused on accounts of anomalous weather in Russian sources (e.g.…”

“…The study of past droughts for the pre-instrumental period on the basis of documentary evidence and natural proxies, such as dendroclimatology, has displayed the possibility to reconstruct drought-events and their societal impact in Europe, which has led to the development of several historical drought reconstructions and indices. “…The vulnerability of species and ecosystems to weather and climate continues to be an important concern. Extremes of weather, for example, such as prolonged drought, destructive hurricane landfalls, heat and cold waves can cause havoc and even alter the biodiversity and function of entire ecosystems [1][2][3]. Indeed, movement of plant and animal species has always been dynamic as the climate has changed over time.…”
