A Preliminary Study on Posing Questions during Operations for Safety Training in Chemistry Experiments

Abstract: A classroom lecture-style of safety training is often conducted at the beginning of each semester in university chemistry experiments. However, we consider that a gap exists between such learning style and actual practice. In our previous study, we showed the effectiveness of ambiguous presentation to memorize the topic of learning. In this paper, we propose to utilize on-site questioning about a caution in a particular operation as a form of ambiguous presentation. A preliminary experiment showed the effectiv… Show more

“…Kiken-Yochi Training (KYT), a type of risk prediction training, was created by Sumitomo Metal Industries Co., LTD in 1974 (Chen & Mao, 2011), and helps workers understand risks in many kinds of industries, including the medical field (Doi et al, 2012;Hirokane, Shiraki, & Ohdo, 2010). KYT originated in Japan (Ito, Taguchi, & Fujinami, 2014) and has become a common safety management method (Ji, 2014). It increases workers' awareness of risks and motivation to practice in a team and improves their problem-solving skills (Chen & Jin, 2012).…”

“…We developed an application for tsunami evacuation instruction based on the results of a preliminary study. In Japan, many companies and schools conduct Kiken Yochi Training (KYT), that is, risk-anticipating training, which originated in Japan [16] and was first practiced in 1976 [17]. This training was conducted with several participants.…”
