A preliminary study of neck-stomach syndrome

Abstract: AIM:To determine the expression of c-Fos, caspase-3 and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) in the cervical cord and stomach of rats with cervical spondylosis, to analyze their relationship, and to offer an explanation of one possible cause for functional dyspepsia (FD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) caused by cervical spondylosis. METHODS:The cervical spondylosis model in rats was established by destroying the stability of cervical posterior column. The cord segments C4-6 and gastric antrum were collected 3 mo and 5 m… Show more

“…Of interest, cervical spondylosis has been recently proposed to induce FGIDs in an experimental rat model. 44 Heart disease has been studied in relation to upper gastrointestinal symptoms, and FD patients appear to more often suffer from circulatory system disease, myocardial infarction, angina, and chest pain. 45 While some risk factors (smoking, obesity, high blood pressure) are known to be common to FD and heart disease, the explanation for the observed comorbidity has often been sought in the side effects of respective pharmacological treatments.…”

“…Increased prevalence of rheumatological disorders has been previously reported in FGIDs, 42,43 while spondylosis has not been studied in FD. “…Indeed, it has been previously shown using the NSQIP database that preoperative anemia is an independent risk factor for complications, the need for perioperative blood transfusion, return to the operating room, and extended length of stay after cervical surgery [12,23]. From a different perspective, it has also been proposed through animal studies that spinal cord compression may result in irregular nervous stimulation of the stomach, a phenomenon termed neck-stomach syndrome [24]. However, this connection remains largely unexplored.…”
