A preliminary screening and characterization of suitable acids for sandstone matrix acidizing technique: a comprehensive review

Abstract: Matrix acidizing is a broadly developed technique in sandstone stimulation to improve the permeability and porosity of a bottom-hole well. The most popular acid used is mud acid (HF-HCl). It is a mixture of hydrofluoric acid and hydrochloric acid. However, one of the conventional problems in sandstone acidizing is that mud acid faces significant issues at high temperature such as rapid rate of reaction, resulting in early acid consumption. This downside has given a negative impact to sandstone acidizing as it … Show more

“…In the acidizing of conventional oil/gas wells, the common acids are hydrochloric acid (HCl), mud acid (hydrochloric acid mixed with hydrofluoric acid (HF)), and these two acid systems mixed with other chemical additives (Economides and Nolte, 2001;Shafiq and Mahmud, 2017;Leong and Mahmud, 2018). In the H block, we used mud acid in the test of the earliest 8 CBM wells.…”

“…It is caused by various reservoir operations such as drilling, completion and production (McLeod 1984). Sandstone acidizing is one of the most effective method to enhance the recovery of a damaged well by increasing the permeability of the formation (Leong and Ben Mahmud 2018). Mud acid is a combination of hydrofluoric acid (HF) and hydrochloric acid (HCl).…”

“…This had resulted in shallow penetration distance and corrosion. In worst case scenario, this also contributed to production loss (Leong and Ben Mahmud 2018). Therefore, many other chelating agents and alternative acids had been developed such as the fluoroboric acid and organic acid (Shafiq and Ben Mahmud 2017).…”
