A preliminary report on a computer‐assisted dental cast analysis system used for the prosthodontic treatment

Abstract: To accomplish computerized 3D morphological analyses of maxillary and mandibular casts with malocclusions on the same co-ordinate system, a new reference co-ordinate located on soft tissue has been proposed consisting of the top of maxillary bilateral tubercles and incisive papilla on the maxillary cast. To test the validity of this co-ordinate system, the angles of the occlusal plane in this system were examined on 10 subjects with normal occlusion. In addition, to analyse maxillary and mandibular casts on th… Show more

“…However, in the case of dentitions with malocclusion, the occlusal plane is imprecise as a reference because dentition often shows abnormal positioning. Hence, in our previous study, we proposed a new reference coordinate system using the top of bilateral maxillary tubercles and incisive papilla (11).…”

“…In order to analyse maxillary and mandibular casts with intercuspal position, an intercuspal bite block was taken using vinyl‐silicone bite material (Exabite) ‡ . Initially, a maxillary cast was measured, the intercuspal bite block placed precisely on the maxillary casts, and measured instead of the mandibular cast (11).…”

“…In previous reports on occlusion diagnosis, bite impressions of patients were measured using optical scanners [10][11][12] . In those reports [10][11][12] , it was necessary to scan multiple times and the measurement procedure was complicated with the possibility of error accumulation.…”

“…In those reports [10][11][12] , it was necessary to scan multiple times and the measurement procedure was complicated with the possibility of error accumulation. As for the microfocus X-ray CT scanner, it has the advantage of capturing the precise 3D shapes of upper and lower dental casts together with the interocclusal record.…”
