A preliminary mineralogical evaluation study of natural asphalt rock characterization, southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia

Abstract: The mineral content of asphalt rocks located in Buton Island (southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia) had remained unknown/unexplored despite the economic importance that may be attached to it. In order to characterize it, evaluation of the natural asphalt rock using xray fluorescence analysis (XRF) and resistivity survey have been carried out. For the XRF analysis, two rock samples were collected from the study area and analyzed at different temperatures in order to observe the variations in concentration and composit… Show more

“…A large amount of bitumen has been fused with minerals to form Buton rock asphalt (BRA), where it is estimated that the mineral and bitumen amounts are 70 and 30 percents, respectively. The bitumen contained in BRA has physical properties similar to petroleum bitumen [7,8]. Continuous efforts are being made to optimize the use of BRA.…”

“…It must also meet asphalt pavement durability requirements, like lower temperature cracking durability, fatigue resistance, and moisture susceptibility. The outstanding characteristics of rock asphalt (RA) modified asphalt have recently garnered study attention [4][5][6][7].…”

“…Geophysical techniques have been applied to investigate the subsurface of the earth in order to explore geological structures of economic interest (in most cases) in areas of environmental studies (Loke et al 2013), hydrology, hydrocarbons, geochemical (Yang et al 2015), engineering, geothermal studies (Khalil et al 2017), geo-hazard assessment, and solid minerals (Arisona et al 2016). With the aid of techniques used for inversion (Gerovska and Araúzo-Bravo 2003;Salem et al 2008;Gerovska et al 2010;Cooper 2015;Cooper and Whitehead 2016), it is possible to determine the horizontal and vertical positions of concealed metallic objects in the near vicinity of the earth's surface in addition to the delineation of deep-seated structures.…”
