“…Hence, the enzymatic pretreatment was also favored to upregulate the gene expressions involved in hydrolysis. Moreover, in terms of pyruvate metabolism, the relative abundance of PK, which could catalyze the pyruvate into acetyl-CoA, 51 was 0.64 and 0.85‰ in the reactors before and after enzymatic pretreatment, respectively. Moreover, the genes of accA and accC encoding acetyl-CoA carboxylase carboxyl transferase, which were involved in the carbohydrate, energy, and lipid metabolic modules, 51 were also observed to be significantly enhanced after enzymatic pretreatment.…”

“…Apart from the microbial community, methane production in anaerobic digestion is also tightly related to bacterial and archaeal enzyme activity. , In this study, the activities of protease/α-glucosidase (nonspecific extracellular enzymes), AK, FTHFS, ACAS, and mcrA in the long-term test were investigated to represent the capability of hydrolysis, acidogenesis, homoacetogenesis, acetate-dependent methanogenesis, and all-pathway methanogenesis, respectively (Figure ). As shown in Figures and S6, the activities of protease and α-glucosidase were significantly inhibited by chitosan at any level investigated ( p < 0.05), indicating that chitosan caused decreases in transformation of proteins and polysaccharides into their microforms (e.g., amino acid and glucose) for the subsequent utilization by acetogens and methanogens.…”

“…Recently, J. Luo et al also investigated the effect of eggshells on food waste fermentation for VFA production by utilizing a metatranscriptomics approach [ 104 ]. The authors analyzed the difference between the gene expression with and without eggshell conditioning and observed an enhancement in VFA production by 12 times.…”
