A Preliminary Investigation of the ISG Glass Vapor Hydration

Abstract: During the geological disposal of high-level waste, the nuclear glass is expected to be first hydrated in water vapor prior to liquid alteration. In the present work, we investigated the vapor hydration of the International simple glass (ISG) at 175°C and different relative humidities (60%, 80% and 98%). The glass hydration was investigated by nuclear reaction analysis (NRA) and Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy. The chemical and mineralogical compositions of the alteration products were studied using s… Show more

“…Formation of C-S-H phases during the alteration of ISG has also been reported by Gin et al 14 and Abdelouas et al, 31 however these authors observed the precipitation of C-S-H when ISG was altered in a KOH solution at pH 11.5 14 or the formation of tobermorite (a crystalline C-S-H phase) when ISG was altered under different relative humidities. 31 In both of these cases the Si and Ca consumed in forming C-S-H must originate from the glass. Despite this, it is notable that the Ca/Si ratios reported by Gin et al…”

“…1 International Simple Glass (ISG) is a simplified model composition for a collaborative study of dissolution/corrosion mechanism of highlevel waste (HLW) glasses. [2][3][4] ISG has been intensively researched recently with studies focusing on its dissolution behavior under different conditions, 3,[5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12] its surface quality, 13 radiation effect, [14][15][16][17][18] waste loading, 19 mechanical property, 20,21 and especially on the properties of its alteration layers using diverse techniques such as electron microprobe analysis, 22 Doppler broadening positron annihilation spectroscopy, 23 and atom probe tomography. 24 However, due to the lack of long-range periodicity, the structural study of glass materials exhibits many challenges.…”

“…3 ISG has been intensively researched by the international community using multiple methods for various purposes as seen in these cited examples and in the web collection on ISG associated with npj Materials Degradation (https://www.nature.com/collections/ wwcfskftrj). 14,[29][30][31][32][33][34][35][36][37] Table 1 shows the buffered reaction solution pH (90°C) before and after the alteration experiments. The alteration experiment samples are identified by a three character code (XXX), where the first character represents the target pH of the reactant solution (3,5,7,9,11), the second character refers to the glass used (I for ISG), and the third denotes the experiment duration in days (7).…”
