A preliminary checklist of the ant (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) fauna of Senegal

Abstract: This work presents the first checklist of the ant species of Senegal, based on a review of the literature and on recent thorough sampling in Senegalese orchard agrosystems during rainy and dry seasons. Eighty-nine species belonging to 31 genera and 9 subfamilies of Formicidae are known. The most speciose genera were Monomorium Mayr, 1855, and Camponotus Mayr, 1861, with 13 and 12 species, respectively. The fresh collection yielded 31 species recorded for the first time in Senegal, including two undescribed spe… Show more

“…Anochetus sedilloti was originally described from Tunisia and has been recorded from KSA, India, and North Africa (Collingwood 1985). It is widespread in the Sahel area of Africa (Taylor et al 2016;Diame et al 2017). The genus is first recorded from Oman by the new species Anochetus annetteae Sharaf, 2017.…”

“…Ants are a significant component of biomass in terrestrial ecosystems but are notoriously known as pests (Bharti et al 2016;Csősz et al 2021). However, they are one of the most ecologically important groups, providing various ecosystem services and thus contribute to the integrity of ecosystems; services include biological control through predation and scavenging, nutrient recycling, soil turning and pollination, elevating them to be of ecological and conservation importance (Folgarait 1998;Andersen et al 2004;Diamé et al 2017;Mauda et al 2017). • J.
