A preliminary checklist of soil ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) of Colombian Amazon

Abstract: BackgroundThis paper presents an updated list of soil ants of the Colombian Amazon collected in three different river basins: the Amazon, the Caquetá and the Putumayo. The list includes 10 subfamilies, 60 genera and 218 species collected from TSBF monoliths at four different depths (Litter, 0 - 10 cm, 10 - 20 cm and 20 - 30 cm). This updated list increases considerably the knowledge of edaphic macrofauna of the region, due to the limited published information about soil ant diversity in the Colombian Amazon re… Show more

“…Considering the growing need for inventories to fill knowledge gaps about the diversity of places that need to be given conservation prior-ity, regional species lists are an important tool (Castro et al, 2018;Demétrio et al, 2017;Vicente et al, 2018). The primary data generated by the inventory of animal and plant species are very important in decision-making regarding environmental conservation management.…”

“…For Colombia, a total of 43 species of army ants were previously reported, thirteen of them in the department of Amazonas (Pérez et al 2009, Castro et al 2018, Fernández et al 2019, Palacio 2019. Our sampling brings the number of species to 44 in Colombia and 17 for Amazonas.…”

“…Previous studies have described the army ant diversity in the Colombian Amazon region. For example,Castro et al (2018) sampled 71 sites in thirteen municipalities and three departments (Caquetá, Putumayo and Amazonas), covering a wide altitudinal range in the Andean-Amazon transition zone, and reported four species of army ants (C. andicola, Eciton hamatum, L. praedator and Neivamyrmex cf. hetschkoi).…”

“…Despite the fact that the lowest soil macrofauna richness and density were observed in the degraded pasture, the soil engineers (Isoptera, Formicidae and Oligochaeta) exhibited higher densities that the other taxonomic groups. Formicidae are usually very abundant in deforested areas [38,93,94], with many species commonly reported in agricultural and urban ecosystems [95]. Earthworms are resistant towards degraded soils [31,61] and can change soil physical properties and biogeochemical processes [96].…”
