A prefrontal to lateral entorhinal pathway disrupts memory

Abstract: While the neural circuits underlying memory encoding, storage, and retrieval are well characterized, the circuits that act to disrupt memory are enigmatic. Here we find that silencing a projection from the prefrontal cortex to the lateral entorhinal cortex surprisingly improves spatial working memory and contextual memory. We then found that the same cell type shows increased activity during errors in a spatial working memory test. Finally we found that optogenetic activation of the same activity patterns can … Show more

“…However, the number of arm entries was significantly reduced in Hnrnph2 R206W/Y males compared to WT littermates (Supplemental Figure 13F). As was observed in the elevated plus maze, the Hnrnph2 R206W/Y males spent significantly less time in the center zone (Figure 7F), the region of the Y maze in which working memory is thought to be engaged (39).…”

As was observed in the elevated plus maze test, the Hnrnph2 R206W/Y male mice spent significantly less time in the center zone ( Figure 7E ), the region of the Y maze in which working memory is thought to be engaged ( 39 ). The percentage of spontaneous alternations was not significantly different between mutants and controls ( Figure 7E ).…”
