The muon capture reactions 2 H(µ − , νµ)nn and 3 He(µ − , νµ) 3 H are studied with conventional or chiral realistic potentials and consistent weak currents. The initial and final A = 2 and 3 nuclear wave functions are obtained from the Argonne v18 or chiral N3LO two-nucleon potential, in combination with, respectively, the Urbana IX or chiral N2LO three-nucleon potential in the case of A = 3. The weak current consists of polar-and axial-vector components. The former are related to the isovector piece of the electromagnetic current via the conserved-vector-current hypothesis. These and the axial currents are derived either in a meson-exchange or in a chiral effective field theory (χEFT) framework. There is one parameter (either the N -to-∆ axial coupling constant in the meson-exchange model, or the strength of a contact term in the χEFT model) which is fixed by reproducing the Gamow-Teller matrix element in tritium β-decay. The model dependence relative to the adopted interactions and currents (and cutoff sensitivity in the χEFT currents) is weak, resulting in total rates of 392.0 ± 2.3 s −1 for A = 2, and 1484 ± 13 s −1 for A = 3, where the spread accounts for this model dependence.

Abstract.We plan to investigate the role of meson exchange currents in the description of the μ − + d → ν μ + n + n and μ − + 3 He → ν μ + 3 H reactions. They both are treated as the decay of the corresponding muonic atoms, with the muon initially on the lowest K shell. The muon binding energy in these atoms can be safely neglected and in the initial state we deal essentially with the deuteron (or 3 He) and muon at rest. These two reactions are interesting for several reasons. First of all, they offer a testing ground for the nuclear wave functions, which for any nucleon-nucleon (NN) and three-nucleon (3N) forces can be constructed for such light systems with great accuracy. In these reactions few-nucleon weak current operators are an important dynamical ingredient. In the current operators apart from the relatively well known single nucleon contributions, two-nucleon parts (generated by various meson exchanges) play an important role. Their details are not well known and several models should be considered. We present our formalism for dealing with these reactions and a simple method for partial wave decomposition of the two-nucleon operators. The crucial nuclear matrix elements of the corresponding weak current operators will be calculated in the momentum space and using partial wave decomposition. The effect of meson exchanges will be investigated in the energy spectrum of the emitted neutrinos (in the deuteron case) and in the total decay rates for the two reactions. We will employ various models of NN and 3N forces, such as the Bonn B or chiral NNLO potentials. Our results with the single nucleon currents look already very promising and we hope for the improvement in the description of the experimental data, when dominant two-nucleon current operators are included in our framework.

We analyze the radiative capture of the negative muon in hydrogen using amplitudes derived within the chiral Lagrangian approach. Besides the leading and next to leading order terms, given by the well-known Rood-Tolhoek Hamiltonian, we extract from these amplitudes the corrections of the next order in 1/M (M is the nucleon mass). In addition, we estimate within the same formalism also the ∆(1232) isobar excitation effects and processes described by an anomalous Lagrangian. Using of the parameters of the model obtained from the analysis of the pion photoproduction, which restricts the arbitrariness of the πN ∆ and γN ∆ vertices off-shell, allows us to explain two times more of the discrepancy between the value g P CAC P of the induced pseudoscalar form factor g P , predicted by partial conservation of the axial current, and of g P extracted from the recent TRIUMF experiment, than the standard approach. Varying these parameters independently, one can remove the discrepancy completely.
