A practical implementation of robotic riveting cell for wedge parts of airframe

Abstract: As there are increasing demands for efficiency and quality in airframe assembly, automation integration is required to replace manual operation. This paper presents a design of a robotic riveting cell for wedge part riveting, which is used on the trailing edge of airfoil. To complete the continuous riveting in a row of rivets at the trailing edge, a robotic riveting cell is designed to realize a set of process actions including rivet feeding/injection/cutting and press riveting. Based on the visual compensatio… Show more

“…Automation consists of using specialized equipment or devices to perform or control a certain task or process, with the objective of eliminating or reducing human intervention. 8 Automation is currently present in several industries, 9,10 but the automotive industry has been the main driver for the development of automation systems, with the aim of increasing their productivity and flexibility. 11 According to Groover, 12 there is a set of factors that lead companies to bet on the automation of their processes: increased productivity, reduced production costs, increased part quality, delivery time reduction, execution of tasks that cannot be performed manually, prevention of non-automation costs, and reduction or elimination of manual operations.…”
