A practical approach for simulation and manufacturing of a ball-end mill using a 5-axis CNC grinding machine

Abstract: This paper presents a detailed manufacturing model that can be used for grinding a ball-end mill using 5-axis CNC (computer numerical controlled) grinding machine. The profile of the helical groove can be calculated exactly using the given wheel profile and relative movements between the workpiece and the grinding wheel. The proposed model is related to some analytical, differential geometry and kinematics to control the motions of the workpiece and grinding wheels in grinding processes. The manufacturing mode… Show more

“…Specifically, the main steps are (in their usual order): Helical-flute, Relief angle and Gashing. The mathematical models for the helical flute and the gash out machining are based on the enveloping theory and the fundamental analytical conditions of engagement between the wheel surface and the helical groove surface [6]. As shown in Fig.…”

“…But the “S” shape of planar edge curve is not good, and the calculation is very complexity. So, Pham and Ko 8 built the mathematical model of the rake face, rear face and cutting edge of the ball-end milling cutter with orthogonal S-shaped edge curve, based on the analysis of the grinding method, and solved the problem about the smooth connection between the ball-end edge curve and the cylindrical helix edge.…”
