A Power-HIL microgrid testbed: Smart energy integration lab (SEIL)

Abstract: Grid integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) is gaining importance in the field of power electronics research. Experimental evaluation of control strategies and detailed evaluation of power interfaces usually require significant allocation of time and resources. This is where the power-hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) techniques help accelerate control design and evaluation processes. The paper presents a PHIL based microgrid testbed: Smart Energy Integration Lab (SEIL); that has been specifically constr… Show more

“…In the power systems domain, they are being introduced in all power system research areas. The list includes network communications [10], cybersecurity [11–16], distribution grid management [17], electric transportation [18], energy storage [19], demand response [20], and distributed energy resources [21, 22]. They are also applied to testing current and emerging WAMPAC applications [23–30].…”

“…Specifically, the increasing prevalence of DERbased CPS and their common-mode vulnerabilities may lead to cyber-threats and risk of tripping DERs offline, resulting in power disruptions and instability in the distribution grid operation. The HIL DER testbeds, such as power HIL [6], [7], communications HIL [8], power and controller HIL [9], have been developed with separate and dedicated HIL cosimulation approaches. Several existing DER CPS testbeds have been reviewed in [10].…”

“…Even though the microgrid concept has been extensively investigated in the literature [2], [3], [4], the research topics are mainly focused on pure electrical system. There are also laboratories and demonstration sites around the world [3], [5], [6], however, to the authors best knowledge, there are no laboratories in the world specifically focused on investigating the different energy systems with their interdependencies in a holistic manner.…”
