A potential diagnostic method for food allergy: clinical application and immunogenicity evaluation of an elemental diet

Abstract: The use of a simple, hypoallergenic elemental diet would appear well suited for diagnosing food allergy. Vivonex was used in 21 patients (5 to 40 years old) suspected of food allergy or those who had failed to respond to the usual management of inhalant allergy. To study immunogenicity, five New Zealand rabbits were immunized with Vivonex, milk, and egg and were evaluated for the production of precipitin and passive cutaneous anaphylactic antibodies, the latter was evaluated in three Hartley guinea pigs. The c… Show more

“…An elemental diet may be of benefit in the management of very severe cases of eczema where the response to standard dermatological topical treatment is unsatisfactory. It is non-antigenic (Galant et al, 1977) and provided adequate nutritional support for these children during severe dietary restriction. This was a preliminary trial and aimed at exploring alternative lines of treatment for children with very severe eczema.…”

“…Some examples are listed in Table 2. Galant et al (1977) immunized rabbits with Vivonex, milk or egg, then tested for serum antibodies by precipitin and passive cutaneous anaphylaxis techniques. They also showed that the elemental diet Vivonex was not immunogenic.…”
