A Potential Antibacterial Wound Dressing Based on Cerium Crosslinked Alginate and Carboxymethyl Cellulose

Abstract: Recently, biopolymer based wound dressing films were studied due to their biocompatibility and biodegradability. In this study, a film was prepared with alginate (Alg) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) by crosslinking with Ce3+ ion to evaluate the antibacterial properties of the film. The film exhibits antibacterial activity against Gram positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram negative (Escherichia coli) bacteria. Physical and chemical characterizations of the film were assessed through FT-IR spectrometry, S… Show more

“…The antibacterial activities of the films were maintained for over of 24 hours. A similar antibacterial behavior was observed for Ce3+ crosslinked Alg and CMC (Abtahi et al, 2022), and Ce 3+ crosslinked chitosan-Alg (Kaygusuz et al, 2017), indicating the consistency of the experimental study. Presence of Zn 2+ cations were found to be effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative model bacteria.…”
