A Possible Third Component in the L Dwarf Binary System DENIS-P J020529.0-115925 Discovered with theHubble Space Telescope

Abstract: We present results showing that the multiple system DENIS-P J020529.0À115925 is likely to be a triple system of very low mass stars and brown dwarfs. The secondary of this previously known binary system shows a clear elongation on six images obtained at six different epochs. Significant residuals remain after point-spread function (PSF) subtraction on these images, which is characteristic of multiplicity and indicates that the secondary is probably a double itself. Dual-PSF fitting shows that the shape of the … Show more

“…Thus, 2MASSW J1146344+223052 may be a triple system. Very low-mass triple systems may not be rare as indicated by the recent observations of GJ 900 (Martín 2003) and DENIS-P J020529.0-115925 (Bouy et al 2005). Confirmation of the suspected unresolved binarity of 2MASSW J1146344+223052 A requires high angular resolution observations or radial velocity monitoring.…”

“…16, we plot . 2 DENIS-P J0205-1159 B is itself likely double (Bouy et al 2005). Our STIS spectrum and the Ks magnitude of Koerner et al (1999) include the sum of the two components.…”

“…2MASS J0700+3157 and 2MASS J0920+3517 bring the tally of high-order multiples composed entirely of likely brown dwarfs to five, and these are the first such triple systems with directly measured masses, semimajor axes, and eccentricities. The first triple brown dwarf identified was DENIS J020529.0−115925 (Bouy et al 2005), where the primary (L5) is orbited by a L/T transition binary (L8+T0). Radigan et al (2013) discovered the triple T dwarf system 2MASS J08381155+1511155, where the brightest component (T3) is orbited by two slightly fainter components (T3+T4.5).…”

“…Three of these systems have total estimated masses M tot 0.15 M , although their tertiary components have not been solidly confirmed. DENIS-P J020529.0-115925ABC (hereafter DENIS J0205-1159AB(C); Delfosse et al 1997;Koerner et al 1999;Bouy et al 2005) was resolved into a ∼7 AU binary by AO and HST imaging. Evidence for a third component was reported by Bouy et al (2005), but only on the basis of persistent residuals in pointspread function fitting of the resolved pair in multi-epoch HST images.…”
