A portability study of IEC 61499: Semantics and tools

Abstract: Abstract-The second edition of the IEC 61499 standard aims to clarify the interpretation ambiguities of function block's execution semantics. This resolves the pivotal issue of realizing portable and interoperable implementations of the IEC 61499 reference architecture. As the IEC 61499 standard is about entering its technology takeoff phase, these clarifications are timely and important. It is hence expected that more innovators of automation software tools, runtime environments, and control hardware will sta… Show more

“…The abstractions are based on the following assumptions: It is assumed that a resource includes a scheduler that controls execution of FBs. Execution of the FB system components in a single resource is always sequential (since a resource is usually implemented as non-preemptive to ensure deterministic behaviour) [52]. The scheduler is built upon a chronologically ordered event queue (events in a queue are ordered by TL-timestamps).…”

“…Function blocks assembly allows designing the control system. The network of function blocks can then be distributed among several controllers interconnected by communication tools while keeping its behavior [15]. IEC 61499 is therefore suitable for machine control in CPS.…”

“…The IEC 61499 tools make different choices in the implementation of the semantics for some specific constructs. In this work, we follow the semantics defined by the 4DIAC tool as it is open source, and its runtime is used by the commercial nxtStudio tool as well [19].…”
