“…According to the hypothesis that event structure determines argument realization, as the verb changes its meaning, it can also change its syntactic properties, as long as the change in meaning affects semantically relevant properties of the verb (AMARAL, 2016). Thus, lexical-semantic theories of verb classification treat verbal polysemy as the property of verbs which are able to belong to different classes (LEVIN; RAPPAPORT HOVAV, 2013;AMARAL, 2016). The Croatian verb potisnuti, for instance, has four entries in CROVALLEX, each one associated with a different meaning and a different class: 3 (14) 1 potisnuti (pòtisnuti) 'press down' class: put_result 2 potisnuti (pòtisnuti) 'force something to stay inside' class: conceal 3 potisnuti (pòtisnuti) 'force to retreat (in battle)' class: force 4 potisnuti (pòtisnuti) 'force when to move, remove; push away' class: battle A final important theoretical assumption for verb classification is the postulation of different levels of classification, more specifically classes and subclasses.…”
