A polyphase glacitectonic model for ice-marginal retreat and terminal moraine development: the Middle Pleistocene British Ice Sheet, northern Norfolk, UK

Abstract: Recent investigations from modern environments demonstrate that many terminal moraines do not simply record a single glacial maximum, but instead reveal a complex pattern of ice-marginal behaviour including polyphase retreat. Within this study, we examine the geomorphology, geology and internal structure of a terminal moraine complex -the 'Cromer Ridge' in north Norfolk to reconstruct patterns of ice-marginal behaviour. Previously, this landform was interpreted as the limit of a southern extension of the Briti… Show more

“…The unit is highly variable, comprising both sedimentary and tectonized elements formed during a southwards ice advance into the north of the region. Subsequent northwards retreat produced a series of cross‐cutting geomorphological and glacitectonic domains that record various phases of dynamic ice‐marginal behaviour (Lee et al ., ).…”

“…open folding exhibiting axial-planar cleavage, parasitic folding and hinge-faulting; cf. Benn & Prave, 2006;Benediktsson et al, 2010;Lee et al, 2013). Similar to Lithofacies A, the longitudinal morphology of the ridge-like bedforms of Lithofacies B suggests that they are the product of helicoidal vortices associated with the upper flow regime (Folk, 1976).…”
