A polarization‐reconfigurable array design based on mode combination technique

Abstract: This article reports a novel polarization-reconfigurable antenna array using the technique of mode combination (MC). It can electronically alter its polarization states between left-hand circular polarization mode, right-hand circular polarization mode, and linear polarization (LP) mode. The antenna array consists of 2 × 2 microstrip antenna elements with one L-slot on each square patch and two PIN diodes located in the slot region. Instead of degenerating circular polarization (CP) and LP modes by exciting di… Show more

“…[19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26] In order to narrow the main beam and increase the gain, some array antenna with three polarizations were designed by integrating with switchable feeding network. [27][28][29] The issue of impedance matching for all polarization states make it difficult to design an antenna with full polarization diversity (two orthogonal LPs and two orthogonal CPs). 30 To circumvent this issue, the reconfigurable impedance converters were utilized to realize matching conditions at different polarization states.…”

“…Reconfigurable antennas with significant advantages of reducing fading loss, improving system's capacity, reducing weight and volume of the system, cost, electromagnetic coupling by decreasing the number of antennas, saving energy by better directing signals toward intended directions and, meeting the high data rate requirement by avoiding spectrum congestion have attracted much attention among researchers 1–4 . These antennas are divided into different categories: frequency reconfigurable antennas, polarization reconfigurable antennas, pattern reconfigurable antennas, or combinations of two or three previous categories 5 .…”
