Gossip – talking about relevant others in their absence – is believed to constitute a large part of informal communication. The perception of the prevalence of gossip implies that it can be unambiguously identified and distinguished from other topics in spontaneous conversation. Its distinctiveness may be justified by multiple theoretical perspectives, including one that describes in-group gossip as an informal device for enforcing norms and punishing norm violators, and another that claims that gossip is used to release frustration and communicate envy. If the ultimate reason for gossip is to facilitate social bonding between the sender and the receiver, however, this would not differentiate gossip from other conversational topics that provide social enjoyment, such as entertainment and food. In a novel contribution, we explore the topics included in a corpus containing 550 hours of unfiltered spontaneous conversation and identify using LDA topic modeling whether some topics are unambiguously prominent in in-group gossip. The explorative approach is integrated with the manual annotation of instances of gossip across the entire corpus. We identified coherent topics of in-group gossip that are clearly different from those of small talk and storytelling. Our analysis finds that feelings, intentions, and opinions are frequently expressed in in-group gossip, more than habits, manners, and behavior. In-group gossip topics are characterized by more words associated with anger, in line with theoretical perspectives that attribute the motives of norm enhancement and punishment or frustration and envy to gossip.

Az elmúlt években a szervezetkutatásban és a tanácsadói gyakorlatban is növekvő figyelem irányult a szervezeti kapcsolathálózatok feltárására és elemzésére. E vizsgálatok azonban szinte minden esetben a pozitív kapcsolatokra összpontosítottak, miközben nem vették figyelembe, milyen hatást fejtenek ki a negatív kapcsolatok a hálózatokban. A negatív kapcsolatok (mint a bizalmatlanság, irigység vagy elkerülés) nem azonosak a pozitív kapcsolatok hiányával, és módszertani szempontból nem tekinthetők azok ellentéteinek sem. A negatív kapcsolatokat legegyszerűbben kognitív ítéletek, negatív érzések és más személyre irányuló magatartási szándékok relatíve tartós vagy visszatérően jelentkező eredőiként határozhatjuk meg. A tanulmány célja, hogy bemutassa a negatív kapcsolatok meghatározásait és modelljeit, illetve ismertesse a korábbi kutatások eredményeit (1) az egyének, (2) a diádok, (3) a triádok és (4) a teljes hálózat elemzési szintjein. A tanulmány felhívja a figyelmet az adatfelvétel és adatelemzés kihívásaira a negatív kapcsolatok kutatása során, amelyekre megoldásokat is kínál. A szakirodalmi áttekintés elsősorban a témában 2010 óta megjelent nemzetközi szakcikkek eredményeit összegzi.

Gossip, one of the core human activities, enforces cooperation, and influences reputation. It is safe to assume that it is a more complex phenomenon than just having a cooperation-building function. Gossip can be linked to a wide variety of mechanisms that are relevant in small groups such as workplaces. The social structure behind gossip is a complex one where individual motivations; relationships between the sender, the receiver, and the target of the gossip; and organizational norms and contexts also play a role in its formation. The current dissertation conducts a thorough, mixed-method analysis of gossip on multiple analytical levels using novel, unique data sources. The questions of the analysis were the following: What are the motivations of the sender for gossiping? Is there a personal or financially driven envy as an explanation for negative gossip? Is perceived fairness and cooperation influencing gossip dynamics within an organization? Does gossip only circulate between the sender and receiver when they have a trusting relationship? What set of relationships between the sender, receiver, and target facilitate the sharing of gossip? How do these different sets of relationships lead to different social functions of gossip? How do gossip texts look structurally? How are the gossip triad members represented in a gossip speech, and what does that tell us about the gossip's intended purpose? What are the organizational determinants of gossip? How does perceived fairness and cohesiveness contribute to gossip in an organization? In the dissertation, we relied on two main datasets. The primary one was an online survey conducted with employees from multiple organizations, from 9 workgroups operating in different sectors, recording employee opinions and networks. Our second dataset was a unique, spontaneous speech corpus based on about 550 hours of audio recordings captured during a Hungarian entertainment program, transcribed, annotated, and validated by manual transcribers. The analysis uses quantitative methods such as descriptive statistics, probability theory; classification methods such as decision trees, hierarchical clustering; part-of-speech (POS) tagging; and social network analysis methods such as Exponential Random Graph Model or Triadic Relation Models. We also used qualitative methods as semi-structured interviews and gossip speech interpretation.
