A platinum promoted Ag/SBA-15 catalyst effective in selective oxidation of methanol – design and surface characterization

Abstract: The aim of this study was better understanding of surface properties of Ag–Pt catalysts and to verify if addition of platinum promoter to silver loaded on SBA-15, would improve the catalytic properties of Ag–Pt materials in selective oxidation of methanol to methyl formate.

“…5 Intermetallic Ag-Pt surfaces are highly active for the electrochemical oxidation of formic acid 6,7 or for selective methanol oxidation to methyl formate. 8 Regarding the shape of nanoparticles, Ag-Pt stellated bimetallic nanoparticles, 9 core-shell nanoparticles 10 or nanocages 11 demonstrated enhanced electrochemical activity for methanol oxidation and oxygen reduction reactions. Concerning the direct synthesis of H 2 O 2 from dihydrogen and dioxygen, Ag-Pt octahedra have been shown to increase by a factor ten the selectivity compared to pure Pt octahedra.…”

“…In the last stage of catalyst preparation, SH species from MPTMS have to be oxidized into sulphonic ones most often using hydrogen peroxide. The obtained materials have been used as acidic catalysts, e.g., for acetalization of glycerol [20], esterification of oleic acid [21], aldol dimerization of levulinic acid [22], interesterification of glyceryl trioctanoate (GTO) [23] or were applied for further modification of mesoporous solids with Au [24].…”
