A pilot study on the use of silicone oil–RMN3 as heavier-than-water endotamponade agent

Abstract: Oxane HD may be a useful tool in complicated RD with large inferior breaks, inferior PVR or combined rhegmatogenous, and choroidal detachment without marked scleral buckling, which put the eye profile out of shape, led to a higher failure rate and reduced the tamponading effectiveness of Oxane HD.

“…The BCVA improved in 71.4% of the patients, and retinal reattachment was achieved in 90.5% of the cases. This compared favorably with recent reports on the management of PVR (19)(20)(21). TA is a water-insoluble steroid that inhibits various postoperative inflammatory reactions, and TA granules have been shown to be safe for administration to the retina (14,22).…”

“…This cloudiness is sufficient to interfere with vision and to impair fundal view. 32 Double filling has been tried with fluorinated silicone and conventional silicone. 47 When redetachment occurred, it occupied a 'new space horizontally between the bubbles and expanding in a triangular shape nasally to the optic disk and temporally to the macula'.…”

“…The intraocular inflammatory signs completely resolved following removal of the high-density silicone oil. In contrast, Rizzo et al 4 used Oxane Hd heavy silicone oil in 28 patients who were operated on for recurrent retinal detachment with proliferative vitreoretinopathy (stage ≥C2) after vitreoretinal surgery, penetrating trauma and combined rhegmatogenous and choroidal detachment. No patient showed intraocular inflammation with Oxane Hd in situ.…”

“…It is used especially in complex cases of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment if the condition is complicated by proliferative vitreoretinopathy and giant retinal tears [1][2][3] . In cases where the proliferative vitreoretinopathy and retinal breaks are found in the lower periphery of the retina, the use of heavy silicone oil is also considered 4,5 . It may be indicated too, in patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy for conditions connected to repeated intravitreal hemorrhage, tractional retinal detachment, traction-rhegmatogenous retinal detachment and tractional retinal detachment with neovascular glaucoma 6,7 .…”
