This topic is "hot" because of its relevance to current standards for clinical care. The September 2001 issue of the Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine featured an article by Stewart et al. 1 that investigated sonographer time allocation for routine obstetric ultrasonography. The authors concluded that the average time spent with each patient was 15 minutes and 22 seconds and the period of time dedicated to transducer manipulation was 9 minutes and 30 seconds per patient. Irrespective of scientific merit, many sonographers fear that hospital administrators and thirdparty payers will view this report as justification for higher patient throughputs and lower reimbursements.About 10 years ago, I was flabbergasted by the following classified ad in the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine newsletter, Reporter:Ultrasonographer -servicing a large metropolitan public hospital in Bologna, Italy.
