A Pilot Study of the Incidence of Post-thoracotomy Pulmonary Complications and the Effectiveness of Pre-thoracotomy Physiotherapy Patient Education

Abstract: Purpose: To estimate the incidence and examine the pattern of post-thoracotomy pulmonary complications (PPC) that are amenable to physiotherapy treatment and to estimate the effect size of a pre-thoracotomy physiotherapy education session compared to no preoperative physiotherapy for reducing PPC. Methods: Forty-two patients undergoing thoracotomy participated in this two-group retrospective-prospective cohort study. The preop group (n ¼ 22) received physiotherapy education prior to surgery and the no preop gr… Show more

“…The benefit of providing physiotherapy for patients prior to thoracic surgery is unclear. Educating patients before their surgery about the postoperative physiotherapy management appears to have no effect on the incidence of postoperative pulmonary complications . Nevertheless, our data suggest that 44% of the respondents provided preoperative education with respect to postoperative physiotherapy management.…”

“…Although this cannot be generalized, because the number of subjects in this study was small, it indicates that STPP can positively affect the prevention of PPCs. In addition, since Reid et al 15) stated that the size of the effect of preoperative physiotherapy education was zero, respiratory self-training applied after surgery, such as STPP, are considered to be more important for the prevention of PPCs. Additionally, introduction of the STPP would reduce medical cost and patient management.…”
