A Pilot Study of a Picture- and Audio-assisted Self-interviewing Method (PIASI) for the Study of Sensitive Questions on HIV in the Field

Abstract: Self-interview methods such as audio computer-assisted self-interviewing (ACASI) are used to improve the accuracy of interview data on sensitive topics in large trials. Small field studies on sensitive topics would benefit from methodological alternatives. In a study on male involvement in antenatal HIV testing in a largely illiterate population in Malawi, we piloted picture-and audio-assisted self-interviewing (PIASI). Out of 388 participants, 96 were randomized to answer six sensitive questions using PIASI a… Show more

“…Using unstructured interviews with open-ended questions enabled the researcher to have face-to-face interaction and discussion with participants to get rich and detailed data about their experiences, thoughts, feelings, and impressions of the phenomena in their own words (Kumar, 2018). This method of data collection gave the researcher a chance to clarify questions, probe, and get first-hand information from my participants regarding their experiences and support services provided to them as international graduate students at Makerere University (Aarnio & Kulmala, 2016). The document check method was also used in this study by reviewing documents in appropriate offices to get recorded information related to international graduate student support services such as policies, reports, and the strategic plan.…”

“…33 In that study, picture interview assisted self-interviewing, or PIASI, was considered easy to use and participants expressed more accepting attitudes in their responses than participants who used standard face-to-face interviews. 34 Another study in India used a color-coded ACASI response for a non-English speaking sample of rural truck drivers and their wives. 35 Cultural relevance enhances pictorial comprehension.…”

“…These 2 studies did not report on the impact of the pictures on participants' ability to understand the question, as intended by the researchers [8,22]. Another study conducted among participants with low literacy in Malawi used a picture booklet with tape-recorded questions as a low-cost alternative to ACASI [23]. They reported that the study participants found it easy to complete the survey using pictures and audio [23].…”
